OpenAI releases o3 and o4-mini reasoning models
OpenAI introduced o3 and o4-mini on 16 April 2025. The company describes them as reasoning models designed to think longer before answering and to combine tools such as web search, Python and image analysis inside ChatGPT.
What was announced
The release focuses on stronger reasoning and more deliberate tool use. OpenAI says the models can decide when and how to use available tools during a task, which is relevant to workflows that combine research, calculation and document analysis.
What it means for operations
A model that can plan across tools may reduce brittle handoffs in research, reporting and exception handling. It does not remove the need for clear inputs, permissions, review steps and logs.
How to evaluate it
Test the model on a contained process with known outcomes. Measure accuracy, review time, failure modes and cost before expanding access to customer data or production actions.
